Lessons from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that can be applied to everyday Life

4 Simple Lessons that Jiu-Jitsu taught me for my EveryDay Life!

1.         When you face another person on the mat, that person might be like any other challenge in our everyday life and that is what is going to do, challenge you. You cannot run away from it, turn your back on it or try to ignore it or pretend that is not there, it will only makes things worst. So you learn how to face these challenges even if they might be considered as big ass problems! You learn to stay present, breath, focus and face the challenge!

2.         With Jiu-Jitsu I’ve learned that I might be free in my mind to choose my next move, but there will always be obstacles in the way. Someone that will be trying to block me in doing what I want to do & eventually what I want to achieve. Everyone is always going to have to overcome some situations to get where they want to be small or big, both will come your way one day or the other! We need to remember not to give up because even with the bigger the opponents,  the issue is not the actual size of the person or of the situation, but is how we carry it, how we react against it and what we do with it as long as we don’t give up. And giving up has nothing to do with winning but mostly being there ready to respond to the challenge with what we’ve got.

3.          Though we are free to make a choice for our next move, we are not free from its consequences. Training more can help realize this connection. For example moving this way or the other whilst sparring, we learn to foresee in what position we eventually end up.  Same for our everyday life, hopefully & ultimately we are always free to make a choice, though we are not free of its consequences. The way we move, affects our future, where we land & affects others as well.

4.          By training and sparing with various people you see lots of characters, psychologies and traits. I realized that indeed when you wear a Gi you can’t lie & you can't hide! You learn to recognize people for ultimately what they are and not what they wear or how they look! An eager person is an eager person regardless his brand of his Gi and so is a humble one, an aggressive one, a selfish one and a person that loves to share knowledge and use BJJ as science.
